Slovenski Pasion was a performance project by Lina Akif, student of drama at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, co-produced by the Association for Contemporary Culture Fotopub and AGRFT.
This durational performance was a confrontation of the artist with the mountain path leading to the altar of Slovenliness - Triglav. The path from Pokljuka to the Aljaž Tower was walked with the burden of confronting the braveness of her skin, with the constant burden of proving her national belonging and identity. Her burden, symbolically represented by the kurent’s head on her back, goes beyond the question of Slovene identity, as it also questions identity in general.
The project is rooted in the intimate experiences of the artist, who, despite her Sudanese-Hungarian roots and despite being born in Maribor, regularly faces problems conditioned by the colour of her complexion. The author wanted to transfer and present her intimate experience in a socio-political space and to explore her relationship with her homeland. She understands that she cannot change the situation in her homeland on her own and through performance alone, but she can relieve herself of the feeling of being a stranger in her own homeland. It also points to the problem of society’s misconceptions that automatically classify individuals as belonging to a national or racial group only by the shade of their skin or other visual attributes.
